Choosing the Right Tg: Tg 150 vs. Tg 170

Introduction

Are you puzzled by the terms Tg 150 and Tg 170 when it comes to PCBs? You’re not alone! At GESP PCB, we understand that choosing the right PCB material is a critical decision. and it’s our mission to provide clarity and guidance to our valued customers.

We want to know Tg or Glass Transition Temperature: What is it? Tg, or Glass Transition Temperature, is crucial to PCB material selection. It represents the point at which the material transitions from a rigid. glass-like state to a more flexible, rubbery state when subjected to heat. In simpler terms, Tg indicates the temperature at which the PCB material may start to deform under heat.

Tg 150 vs. Tg 170

For FR4 materials, normal Tg is between 130°C and 140°C. Medium Tg exceeds 150°C, but high Tg can reach 170°C or higher. Such as 180°C. PCBs should be flame retardant during the manufacturing process. and more importantly, maintain board dimensional (X, Y, Z) stability. In general, the higher the Tg, the better. However, too high a Tg value will increase the difficulty of machining. and increase the cost of raw materials and manufacturing. Therefore, choose a substrate that has a high Tg and is easy to machine.

The main factor to consider when using 150 Tg or 170 Tg PCB materials is the operating temperature. If it is below 130C/140C, then Tg 150 is the right material for your PCB. but if the operating temperature is around 150C, then you must choose 170 Tg.

🌡️ Tg 150 - When to Choose ?

  • Tg 150 (Glass Transition Temperature 150°C):
  • Suitable for most standard electronic applications.
  • Can withstand temperatures up to 150°C before softening or losing structural integrity.
  • Cost-effective and widely used in everyday electronic devices.
  • Ideal for applications with moderate thermal demands.

Tg 150 PCB materials designed to withstand temperatures up to 150°C . before they start to soften or lose their structural integrity. These materials are suitable for most standard applications. ensuring reliable performance in everyday electronic devices and applications.

🚀 Tg 170 - Elevating Your Options

  • Tg 170 (Glass Transition Temperature 170°C):
  • Designed for applications with high-temperature requirements.
  • Withstands temperatures up to 170°C before softening.
  • Ideal for high-power electronics, automotive, and industrial equipment.
  • Provides enhanced thermal performance in harsh environments.

Tg 170 PCB materials, on the other hand, offer an even higher heat resistance. with a temperature threshold of 170°C . These materials are ideal for applications that demand enhanced thermal performance. such as high-power electronics, automotive, and industrial equipment.

Which One is Better: Tg 150 or Tg 170?

The choice between Tg 150 and Tg 170 depends on your specific application requirements. Here’s a quick guide:

  • Tg 150 is suitable for most standard electronics. providing a balance of performance and cost-effectiveness.
  • Tg 170 is the top choice for applications with high-temperature demands or in harsh environments.
