THOUGHTS ON LAMINATE CONSTRUCTION FOR HYBRID RF PCBs

When making a PCB out of different materials, it’s very important to know both the physical properties of the laminate and what your equipment can do. Depending on the CTE values of each layer of material (such as FR4, PTFE, and copper), each material grows at a different rate when exposed to high temperatures (i.e. lamination). This can cause big problems with alignment when one material shrinks and another one grows, and it can also cause the copper-to-substrate interfaces to come apart. So, not all materials should be used in hybrid applications because they can’t be made, no matter how well they work.
